Dr Simone Li
Towards targeted modulation of the microbiome as a therapeutic paradigm

The collective of microorganisms living within and on us has recently emerged as an important determinant of health and wellbeing. Large cohort studies, albeit heavily focused on industrialised regions of the world, and clinical interventions such as faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) have linked our microbes to an increasing number of human diseases and other conditions. This has promoted the use of beneficial microbiome manipulation as a therapeutic strategy.
In my talk, I will discuss current approaches that target the microbiome and how their efficacy can be improved by a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying microbiome dynamics.

Bio:
Simone is an NHMRC CJ Martin Fellow currently based at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability in Copenhagen, Denmark. Originally from Sydney, she has a BEng/BArts (Bioinformatics Hons I; UNSW) and was the first PhD student selected under the EMBL Australia initiative, which took her to the headquarters of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg, Germany.
Under the mentorship of Profs Marc Wilkins, Peer Bork and Morten Sommer, Simone has been at the forefront of systems biology, microbiome and biotechnology research that have culminated in first-authorships in Science and Nature Medicine, amongst others. When she's not feeding her gut microbes with chicken nuggets and flat whites, Simone also advocates for open science, equity in research culture and effective science communication through her role as Community Ambassador at eLife.
